A traumatic experience can have a profound and long lasting effect, making every day life very difficult to deal with. Symptoms such as “flashbacks”, intrusive memories, nightmares, avoidance, high levels of fear and anxiety, sleep and concentration problems are very common but treatable with specialist psychological therapy.
You will be offered a comprehensive psychological assessment to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of PTSD and whether trauma-focused psychological therapy is likely to be beneficial at this time.
If accepted for treatment, you will be offered psycho-education and symptom management for PTSD, followed by trauma-focused psychological therapy.
This treatment will entail talking about and processing trauma memories, with the support and guidance of your psychologist, with the aim of reducing your symptoms of PTSD and making the memories of your experience more manageable.
Treatment models used include Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) and Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET).
